| Polished Pewter Skull Flask. This metal flask has a sculpted pewter skull soldered onto front. Also has a pewter skull featured as the twist off cap. Measures 3 1/2" x 5 5/8" tall and holds 6 oz. Made by Wentworth of Sheffield, England. Pewter was introduced to Britain by the Romans. Although there are references to pewterers in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was not until the 14th century that pewter became widely used. The Worshipful Company of Pewterers was granted a Royal Charter by King Edward IV in 1473. This Charter allowed the company to set and enforce standards and to regulate the pewter trade throughout England. Pewter was once an expensive luxury affordable only by the aristocracy, but by the 18th century had become readily available as an alternative to gold and silver. Pewter, once the prize of kings, is still very much a possession to be used and adored.
